I am a full-time professional photographer, living and working in Halfway House, in the Johannesburg area, South Africa.
I jumped off the corporate treadmill almost four years ago to pursue my career in photography, having tested the market for about 18 months and found that there was a great response to my work. I built a 6 meter x 6 meter studio at home where I do most of my work, although I also work on location for my corporate clients.
My main interest is in photographing people. I love spending time with a family, getting to know them and capturing the interactions between them. I know the results will be treasured for a long time, so I take special care to provide images that will bring back great memories for them.
My clients receive all their images in colour, and many of them in black-and-white, sepia or toned. Vintage effects are also a popular option, especially with the Maternity and Newborn photographs.
One of my strengths is being able to turn a relatively mundane photo into something special – a work of art – using the advanced techniques available in modern software such as Photoshop, Nik, Exposure 5 and others. I try to always provide my clients with at least one such image, free of charge, with every photo-shoot. I feel this is what sets me apart from my competitors – seeing my work as a form of artistic expression, not simply a way to earn a living. I see every image as a potential canvas or framed print, and I visualise how it would look given pride of place on a living-room wall. Seeing my work in this way allows me to focus and to give each image my full attention.
My portfolio includes Real Estate, Events, Family, Newborn, Macro, Still Life, Landscape and Product Photography. All of my Macro, Still Life and Landscape works are available as stretched canvases or high-resolution enlarged prints.
I enjoy taking a collection of a client’s favourite images and compiling them into a coffee table photo-book, printed on high-quality photographic paper and expertly bound. These are available with printed, linen, leatherette or hand-stitched leather covers, and are truly something to display proudly in one’s home.
My goal is to grow my business to a stage where I can comfortably pay the bills, but not so big that I don’t have time to interact properly with all my clients. Personal relationships are important to me – I have met some wonderful people over the past year who I hope I will have the pleasure of working with again.
My personal development as a photographer is also extremely important to me – I spend all my spare time studying photography, learning from other photographers, trying new photography techniques and honing my post-processing skills. I want to be the very best I can be, and the only way to get there is to work hard at it!
A new (ad)venture
Recently I have started exploring other areas of artistic and creative expression. I have taught myself tapestry crochet and have made many unique bags that I am offering for sale now that all the ladies in my family have at least one! I will be selling the patterns with full instructions so that others can learn and enjoy this technique. If you are interested, please visit my Tapestry Crochet & Crafts page on this website, and Like the page Tapestry Crochet and Crafts on Facebook too.
